ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial is studying a condition called portal vein thrombosis (PVT) in newborns who have had an umbilical catheter, which is a small tube placed in the umbilical cord to help with medical treatments. The researchers want to find out how common PVT is in these babies, what factors might increase the risk of developing this condition, where the PVT occurs, and how it affects the babies' health over time.

To be eligible for the study, newborns aged 1 to 28 days who have had an umbilical catheter placed for any reason while being treated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Assiut University Children's Hospital can participate. However, babies who already have PVT and did not have an umbilical catheter before cannot join the study. If a baby is eligible, they will be monitored for signs of PVT and their health will be tracked throughout the study period, which runs from October 2023 to September 2024. This research aims to improve understanding and care for newborns who may experience this serious condition.
