ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is exploring the function of immune cells called neutrophils in children who have been diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), which includes conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. The researchers want to understand how well these immune cells are working in both very young patients (under 6 years old) and those diagnosed later in childhood. They will measure something called oxidative burst activity, which helps show how effectively neutrophils can fight off infections. The study aims to find any genetic factors that might affect this immune function and to see if there are any unique forms of IBD that are inherited.
Children under 18 with a confirmed diagnosis of IBD are eligible to participate in this study, along with healthy peers for comparison. If your child joins the study, they will undergo tests to assess their neutrophil function, and if any abnormalities are found, further genetic testing may be done. The researchers hope to include about 150 children over the next year and will work across several pediatric hospitals in Bucharest, Romania. It's important to note that children with certain other medical conditions or infections are not eligible to participate. This study could help improve our understanding of IBD and lead to better treatments in the future!
