ClinConnect Summary
This study is checking whether chewing gum before surgery can help reduce anxiety before anesthesia and lessen throat pain after surgery in adult women having elective breast surgery with a laryngeal mask airway. It’s a randomized trial with two groups: one group chews gum for 2 minutes before the operation, while the other group receives usual care with no gum. The researchers will measure preoperative anxiety with a short questionnaire (APAIS) and will check throat pain after surgery at 2, 4, and 6 hours using a 0–10 pain scale.
Eligible participants are adult women (18 years or older) scheduled for elective breast surgery, in generally good health (ASA I–II), who do not smoke. Exclusions include asthma, chronic throat problems, reflux, recent use of steroids, or certain airway anatomy issues. The study is being conducted at Ankara Medipol University in Turkey and plans to enroll about 92 people. At this time, results aren’t available yet, and the study is still enrolling by invitation.
