ClinConnect Summary
The RSI-LTO study is looking at the long-term effects of two medications, ketamine and etomidate, given during a procedure called rapid sequence intubation (RSI). This procedure is often necessary for patients who need help breathing in emergency situations. Unfortunately, many patients who are intubated may experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of this intense experience. PTSD can cause lasting symptoms like anxiety, nightmares, and difficulty in daily life. The study aims to see if ketamine can help reduce these PTSD symptoms, based on its potential to block certain brain pathways involved in forming traumatic memories.
To participate in this trial, you need to have been enrolled in the earlier RSI trial. Eligible participants are generally adults aged 65 to 74 who can understand and follow commands. If you or a family member are considering this study, it’s important to know that it is currently recruiting participants, and the goal is to improve the overall mental health and quality of life for those who have experienced critical illnesses and intubation.
