ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial, called "Virtual Reality Distraction for Maternal Milk Expression," is exploring whether using virtual reality (VR) can help mothers of premature newborns feel less stressed and more comfortable while expressing breast milk. Expressing milk is important for the health of preterm babies, but many mothers find it uncomfortable and stressful, which can lead them to stop after a few weeks. The study aims to see if immersing mothers in a VR environment can help them cope with this discomfort and potentially increase the amount of milk they express.

To participate in this study, mothers must be at least 18 years old, have given birth to a premature baby (born at 29 weeks or less), and be at least two weeks postpartum. They should also be able to speak and read either French or English and have chosen to breastfeed. During the trial, mothers will try using VR for two days and then have two days without it, allowing researchers to see how the VR experience affects their stress, comfort, and milk production. The study will take place in a NICU in Montreal, and healthcare workers will also provide feedback on the use of VR in this setting.
