ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying whether introducing a Mediterranean Diet (MD) early on can help prevent or reduce chronic diseases in children, particularly in underserved areas like Scampia, Italy. The Mediterranean Diet emphasizes healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats. In this trial, healthy newborns who weigh more than 2000 grams and live in the Scampia area may be eligible to participate. Unfortunately, newborns who were born very premature, have serious congenital issues, or are dealing with severe health problems cannot participate.
Participants in the trial will be divided into two groups. One group will receive guidance on how to follow a Mediterranean Diet starting when they begin eating solid foods, while the other group will follow standard local dietary recommendations. Researchers will regularly check how well families are sticking to the diet and monitor the health of the children over time. They will also collect saliva and stool samples for further analysis. This innovative approach aims to improve childhood nutrition and could serve as a helpful model for promoting healthier eating habits in other urban areas around the world.
