ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is looking at how over-the-counter antihistamines, which are commonly used to treat allergies, may affect the body’s ability to handle heat stress. Allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, affects around 25% of Canadians and is expected to become more common due to climate change. There are concerns that these antihistamines might interfere with how our bodies regulate temperature during hot weather, potentially leading to heat-related illnesses. The trial will assess whether three widely-used antihistamines, when taken at the recommended doses, change the body's response to heat.
To participate in this study, you need to be between 19 and 39 years old, fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and have a body mass index (BMI) under 30. You should also be able to give your consent to join the study. If you have certain health conditions, are taking specific medications, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, you may not be eligible. Participants will take the antihistamines as directed and will be closely monitored during the trial to see how their bodies react to heat. This study aims to provide clearer answers about the safety of using these medications during hot weather, which could help improve health guidelines in the future.
