Association of Acne Vulgaris With Oral Hygiene and Gingivitis

This clinical trial is studying the connection between acne vulgaris, commonly known as acne, and oral hygiene, including gum health (gingivitis) and dental plaque. Researchers want to find out if the severity of acne is related to the level of gum disease and whether good oral care might affect how well acne treatments work. If you or someone you know is between the ages of 13 and 18, healthy, and hasn’t recently used antibiotics or received treatment for acne or gum disease, you might be eligible to participate.

Participants will first visit a dermatology clinic for an acne evaluation, followed by an appointment at a gum health clinic. If someone has severe acne, they will return to the dermatology clinic about a month and a half later for another check-up. During the trial, participants may be prescribed a common antibiotic called doxycycline to help treat their acne. This study is in the planning stage and has not started recruiting participants yet, so if you’re interested, keep an eye out for updates!

Eligibility criteria

• Inclusion Criteria:
• • Being systemically healthy
• • Not using any medication regularly
• • Not having received acne treatment before
• • Not having a known allergy to Doxycycline/Tetracycline antibiotics
• • Not having received periodontal disease treatment in the last 6 months
• • Not having taken antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs in the last month
• • Not having used antiseptic mouthwash in the last month
• • Being between the ages of 13-18
• • No radiographic bone loss or clinical attachment loss
• • Absence of any diagnosed psychiatric disease
• Exclusion Criteria:
• • Smoking
• • Using antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs
• • Having significant psychological problems
• • Mouth breathing
