ClinConnect Summary
The Uganda Sickle Surveillance Study (US-3) is researching sickle cell disease (SCD), a serious condition that affects many children in Uganda. This study aims to find out how common sickle cell trait (SCT) and sickle cell disease are in different areas of the country. SCD is particularly concerning because a large number of affected children don't survive past five years old. By collecting up to a million blood samples from children across Uganda between 2015 and 2030, researchers hope to get a clearer picture of how widespread this condition is and where the biggest challenges are.
Anyone up to 365 days old can participate in this study, and researchers are especially looking for children with sickle cell traits. If you or your child is selected to take part, you can expect to provide a blood sample, which will help researchers gather important information about sickle cell disease in Uganda. This study is crucial for understanding and addressing the needs of children with SCD, helping to improve their health and survival chances in the future.
