ClinConnect Summary
The "More Outside Your Door" clinical trial is looking to help young children in Alaska, particularly Yup'ik Alaska Native preschoolers, develop healthy eating and activity habits to reduce the risk of obesity. This study is important because preschool years are a crucial time for growth and learning good habits that can last a lifetime. The program will provide children with access to traditional foods and encourage outdoor activities that are part of the Yup'ik culture. Over five years, children in 12 rural Alaskan communities will participate in a special program designed to improve their nutrition and physical activity compared to the regular Head Start program.
To be eligible, children must be between 3 to 5 years old, have a parent who identifies as Alaska Native, and be enrolled in one of the participating Head Start programs. Parents will need to give consent for their child to join. Participants can expect to be part of fun activities that promote healthy eating and outdoor play, which can positively impact their overall health. This trial not only aims to help current preschoolers but also hopes to create lasting changes in their communities by instilling healthy habits from a young age.
