ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying the occurrence of delirium in patients who have had heart surgery and are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Delirium is a sudden change in mental status that can cause confusion and disorientation. The researchers want to find out how common this condition is after cardiac surgery and how well existing measures identify it. They will also test a new program that provides sensory stimulation to help patients, their families, and the ICU staff cope better during this challenging time.
To participate in the study, patients must be over 18, able to understand and give consent, and undergoing cardiac surgery at Hammersmith Hospital. Family members or friends nominated by the patient can participate, along with ICU nurses who have cared for eligible patients. Throughout the study, which will last a year, participants can expect to be involved in interviews and complete quality-of-life questionnaires. The goal is to improve care for patients recovering from cardiac surgery and support their families while also providing valuable insights for the ICU staff.
