ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is looking at how older adults, aged 60 and over, manage oral and swallowing functions, especially when they visit the emergency department. Researchers believe that many older individuals may have difficulties with swallowing and oral functions, which could be linked to other health issues. If you or a loved one is eligible, you will participate in a series of simple activities during the emergency visit, such as providing saliva samples, drinking water, eating a saltine cracker, and completing some straightforward tests and surveys.
To participate, individuals must be at least 60 years old, in stable health, and able to safely swallow water and a cracker as assessed by the emergency department staff. Unfortunately, those who are prisoners or do not speak English are not eligible for this study. This research aims to better understand swallowing issues in older adults, which could lead to improved care and support for this population in the future.
