ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying whether doing hand grip exercises can help reduce the risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in adults who have a special type of IV line called a peripherally-inserted central catheter (PICC line). DVT is a condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein, and it can happen to patients with PICC lines. The trial is being conducted at TriHealth, where around 2-4 patients each month experience DVT after getting a PICC line. This study will be the first of its kind in the United States to look specifically at grip exercises for DVT prevention.
To participate in this trial, you must be an adult who has had a PICC line placed in the last 24 hours and is currently admitted to either Bethesda North Hospital or Good Samaritan Hospital. Unfortunately, those under 18, non-English speakers, individuals with bleeding disorders, or those who cannot perform the grip exercises due to severe limb problems won’t be eligible. If you join the study, you can expect to perform simple hand grip exercises and help researchers learn more about how these exercises might keep patients safer from DVT while they are hospitalized.
