ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial is investigating a new way to study the biofilm that can develop inside endotracheal tubes used for patients on mechanical ventilation in intensive care units. Biofilm is a layer of bacteria that can form on surfaces and may be linked to ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), a serious lung infection that can occur in critically ill patients. The trial aims to use a special imaging technique called full-field optical coherence tomography (OCT) to get a clearer picture of this biofilm and understand its role in infections like VAP. This research could help improve treatment and prevention strategies for these infections.

To participate in the trial, patients need to be at least 18 years old and have been on mechanical ventilation for at least two days. They must also be able to agree to participate or have a relative who can provide consent. Patients who cannot provide consent themselves, or whose tube samples cannot be collected for any reason, will not be eligible. Those who join the study can expect to undergo detailed imaging of their endotracheal tube biofilm, which will help researchers learn more about how it relates to infections in critically ill patients. This study is currently recruiting participants, and all genders are welcome to join.
