ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying how different measurements, like oxygen consumption and breathing effort, can help predict whether patients who are on mechanical ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) can safely stop using the ventilator. Many patients who have been on a ventilator for more than 72 hours struggle to breathe on their own, and even after passing a test called the Spontaneous Breathing Trial (SBT), some may still need to be put back on the ventilator. The researchers believe that by looking at new measurements of breathing effort, they can better determine which patients are ready to come off the ventilator without needing to be re-intubated.
To participate in this trial, individuals must be over 18 years old and have been on mechanical ventilation for at least 24 hours. They should be stable enough for the breathing trial, and an esophageal catheter (a tube that monitors breathing effort) needs to be in place. However, patients with severe lung disease or significant heart problems may not be eligible. If you join the study, you will have your breathing and oxygen levels monitored closely, and the goal is to improve the way doctors assess patients' readiness to breathe independently.
