ClinConnect Summary
This trial is testing a structured method called SIOHPS that brings together occupational safety and health with patient safety in healthcare workplaces. It uses a stepped-wedge design, so all participating workplaces will eventually start using the program, but at different times. The main things the researchers will look at are sick leave (how many days employees are off work) and quality of care (readmission rates within 30 days after discharge). They’ll also track many secondary factors like safety climate, workload, learning at work, health, productivity, and patient safety, using workplace data and questionnaires. The study aims to determine not only whether SIOHPS works, but also whether it is cost-effective for the health system.
eligible participants are adults aged 18–70 who work at least 50% at a participating healthcare workplace that provides 24-hour care, and who are generally healthy. Units planning other major safety or health projects or units that provide pediatric or psychiatric care are not included. If your workplace participates, you can expect staff education, short daily team reflections, and help with planning and following up on safety improvements. Data are collected from workplace records and anonymous questionnaires at baseline, 4 months, and 8 months after starting the intervention. The study runs from 2024 to an estimated completion in 2026, results will be shared when available, and participation is voluntary with informed consent.
