ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial, called "Platelet Function After Cardiac Surgery," is looking at how well different devices used to collect and process blood during heart surgery can preserve platelets. Platelets are small cells in our blood that help with clotting and stopping bleeding. During cardiac surgery, blood is often saved and reused to reduce the need for donated blood. However, when the blood is processed, some important components, like plasma which contains platelets, can be lost. This study aims to understand if two different blood collection systems do a good job of keeping the platelets intact and functioning properly.
To participate in this trial, you need to be at least 18 years old and scheduled for an elective high-risk heart surgery that requires a heart-lung machine for more than two hours. You also cannot be taking certain medications that thin the blood before surgery. If you join the study, you'll help researchers learn how effective these devices are, which could improve patient outcomes after surgery. It's important to note that you will need to sign a consent form to participate, which means you should understand what the study involves. If you have any questions or concerns, the research team is there to help you.
