ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying the effects of a procedure called preoxygenation in patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) who are on mechanical ventilation. When patients need their airways cleared of mucus or other blockages, a procedure called suctioning is performed. The trial aims to find out if giving extra oxygen for a few minutes before suctioning can help prevent problems like low oxygen levels in the blood, which can happen during the procedure. Although previous guidelines suggested preoxygenation to avoid these issues, it’s unclear if this is still necessary since suctioning is now done based on the patient's needs rather than on a regular schedule.
To participate in this trial, individuals must be 18 years or older, currently hospitalized in the ICU, and have been on mechanical ventilation for less than 24 hours. Participants will need to provide consent, either themselves or through a trusted person. The trial is currently recruiting and is open to all genders. It's important to know that while preoxygenation might reduce short-term risks of low oxygen levels, it could also lead to other complications. The trial aims to better understand these risks and benefits to improve care for ICU patients.
