ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying a less invasive surgical method called video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for treating empyema, which is a collection of fluid in the chest that can occur after pneumonia. The goal is to compare the benefits and drawbacks of VATS with a more traditional surgery known as thoracotomy. Researchers hope that VATS will lead to shorter hospital stays, fewer complications, and a quicker recovery for children who need this treatment.
To be eligible for this study, participants must be pediatric patients between the ages of 1 and 18 who have empyema resulting from pneumonia and have had the condition for less than three weeks. Unfortunately, children under 1 year old or those with specific types of empyema caused by trauma or other serious conditions cannot participate. If eligible, participants can expect to undergo the VATS procedure and be closely monitored by the medical team to assess how well this approach works compared to traditional surgery. This study is currently recruiting participants, and it aims to improve how empyema is treated in young patients.
