ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying how different breathing techniques used during general anesthesia affect the risk of lung collapse (known as atelectasis) in children. The two techniques being compared are volume controlled ventilation (where the amount of air is set) and pressure controlled ventilation (where the pressure is maintained but the amount of air can vary). Atelectasis is a common issue during anesthesia and can occur in up to 90% of patients, especially in children, so understanding which technique might help reduce this risk is important.
To participate, children aged 2 to 10 years who are scheduled for elective surgery lasting more than 30 minutes may be eligible. They should be generally healthy, with no recent lung infections or surgeries, and not have certain medical conditions. If a child joins the study, they will undergo standard anesthesia care with one of the two breathing techniques, and their lung health will be monitored using a safe imaging method called lung ultrasonography. This study aims to improve our understanding of how these ventilation methods impact children's lung health during surgery.
