ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying the effects of preventive oxygen therapy on patients who have undergone bariatric surgery and do not have treated obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Specifically, the trial will compare two groups of patients: one group will receive oxygen therapy during their first night in the hospital after surgery, while the other group will not. The researchers want to find out if oxygen therapy makes a difference in the number of breathing interruptions (called the Apnea-Hypopnea Index, or AHI) that patients experience.
To be eligible for the trial, participants must be adults aged 65 to 74 who are having primary bariatric surgery, such as gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy, and must be able to read and speak Dutch. Those who have previously had bariatric surgery, have diagnosed OSA, or are professional drivers cannot participate. If you choose to join the study, you can expect to be randomly assigned to one of the two groups and monitored during your recovery. This research aims to improve care for patients undergoing bariatric surgery by better understanding the need for oxygen therapy.
