ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial is looking at two different methods of a procedure called endotracheal aspiration, which helps clear mucus from the airways of newborns who need extra help breathing in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This procedure can be uncomfortable for babies, and the trial aims to see if one method—called closed aspiration—is better than the other—open aspiration—in reducing stress and improving comfort for these vulnerable newborns.

To be eligible for this study, newborns must be on a breathing machine, need suctioning, and be stable in their condition. They should not have had any painful procedures within an hour before the aspiration. Unfortunately, newborns with certain facial or skull deformities or genetic conditions cannot participate. If enrolled in the trial, participants will undergo either the open or closed aspiration procedure, and the research team will monitor their response to see which method works best to help them breathe easier while causing less discomfort.
