ClinConnect Summary
The POASAC Study is looking at how different types of anemia (a condition where you don’t have enough healthy red blood cells) affect patients undergoing moderate to high-risk surgeries. Specifically, it will compare complications related to how well the body can supply and use oxygen during and after surgery in patients with various types of anemia: iron-deficiency anemia, anemia related to chronic illness, and combined anemia. The study will also include patients who do not have anemia to see if there are differences in complications between those with and without this condition.
To participate in this study, you need to be at least 18 years old and scheduled for an elective surgery that lasts more than one hour, with a planned hospital stay longer than 24 hours. However, you can’t participate if you are pregnant, live at high altitudes, have other serious blood disorders, or have certain severe health issues that could complicate the study. If you decide to join, you can expect to be closely monitored during your surgery and recovery to help researchers understand the relationship between anemia and surgical outcomes. Your participation could help improve care for future patients facing similar surgeries.
