ClinConnect Summary
The BARINTUBE study is looking at the challenges of managing airways in patients with obesity who are undergoing bariatric surgery. When patients have a higher body weight, it can make it more difficult for doctors to secure an airway safely during anesthesia, which is important for patient safety and successful surgery. This study aims to find out how often these difficulties occur in patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher who need intubation—this is when a tube is placed in the throat to help with breathing during surgery.
To participate, individuals must be over 18 years old, have a BMI of 30 or more, and be scheduled for bariatric surgery that requires intubation. The researchers will gather information about patients’ health and how their intubation goes. They plan to include about 1,290 patients in this study. By understanding how common difficult airways are in this group of patients, the study will help improve safety measures and surgical outcomes in the future. Participation will involve providing consent and undergoing the usual surgical procedures, with additional monitoring for airway management challenges.
