ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial is studying whether a mobile health program called OurSleepKit can help couples use continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy more effectively for treating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA is a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep, and CPAP is a common treatment that helps keep the airways open while sleeping. In this study, newly diagnosed patients with OSA who are ready to start CPAP will participate along with their partners. They will receive helpful information and resources on their mobile devices for six months, allowing them to engage with the materials at their own pace.

To be eligible for the trial, participants should be at least 18 years old, diagnosed with OSA, and living with a partner who has not been diagnosed with OSA or using CPAP. Both partners need to have their own internet-connected mobile devices. Throughout the study, participants will answer questions about their experiences with CPAP at different time points, such as one week and six months after starting treatment. This feedback will help researchers understand how well the program supports both patients and their partners. At the end of the study, some couples may be invited for a virtual discussion to share their experiences.

Eligibility criteria

  • Inclusion Criteria:
  • patients should be males or females (age≥18 years) with diagnosed OSA and candidates for CPAP therapy (with any type of pressure delivery mode), and are cohabiting with their partner for at least one year
  • The partners of eligible patients will be recruited if they are not diagnosed with OSA and not using CPAP
  • both partners should have their own mobile devices with access to the internet
  • Exclusion Criteria:
  • have a diagnosis of a sleep disorder other than OSA based on a polysomnogram (e.g., central sleep apnea, narcolepsy, or periodic limb movement disorder)
  • have planned bariatric surgery (as they typically quit CPAP after surgery)
  • have a partner using CPAP
  • are pregnant because the changes in respiration and sleep quality occurring with pregnancy may confound the results.
  • couples with one or both partners doing regular overnight shift work or those unable to speak or write in English will be excluded.
