ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is focused on understanding the causes of neonatal jaundice, a condition where newborns have a yellowish tint to their skin and eyes due to high levels of bilirubin, a substance produced when the body breaks down red blood cells. The study aims to examine liver tissue samples (biopsies) from infants with persistent jaundice to identify key features that can help doctors determine whether the jaundice is caused by problems inside the liver (intra-hepatic) or outside of it (extra-hepatic). By doing this, the researchers hope to evaluate how effective liver biopsies are as a diagnostic tool when combined with clinical evaluations and laboratory tests.
To participate in this trial, infants aged between 30 days and 1 year who have been diagnosed with persistent neonatal jaundice between 2019 and 2023 at Assiut University Hospitals in Egypt may be eligible. However, babies older than one year, those who had a liver biopsy but were not diagnosed with persistent jaundice, or those with incomplete medical information will not be included. The trial is not yet recruiting participants, but once it begins, families can expect to contribute to important research that could improve understanding and treatment of jaundice in newborns.
