ClinConnect Summary
The Oxford Pleural Embolisation Trial is studying a new technique called the pleural blood patch (PBP) to see if it can help reduce complications for patients undergoing thermal ablation for lung cancer. Thermal ablation is a treatment that uses heat to destroy lung tumors, but it can sometimes cause air leaks from the lungs, leading to the need for a drainage tube. This trial will compare two groups of patients: those who receive lung ablation with the PBP technique and those who do not. The researchers hope to find out if using PBP can lower the number of patients who need a drain, as well as improve recovery times and reduce hospital stays.
To participate in the trial, you must be 18 years or older and clinically indicated for lung ablation. However, if you have three or more lung lesions that need treatment at the same time, or if you cannot proceed with the lung ablation procedure, you may not be eligible. If you join the study, you can expect to be randomly assigned to one of the two treatment groups and will be monitored for various outcomes, such as the amount of air leakage and your overall recovery experience. This trial is important because it may help make lung cancer treatments safer and quicker, potentially allowing patients to go home the same day as their procedure.
