ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial is studying how different low flow rates of oxygen affect the buildup of carbon dioxide in children who are temporarily not breathing, a condition known as apnea, during anesthesia for surgery. The researchers want to understand how these low flow rates can help manage the levels of carbon dioxide in the body during this short period of not breathing, which lasts for about three minutes.

The trial is open to children aged 1 to 6 years who weigh between 10 and 20 kilograms and are scheduled for elective surgery under general anesthesia. To participate, children must be in good health, specifically classified as having low-risk physical status. However, children with certain health conditions, like severe asthma or sleep apnea, will not be eligible. Families who consent to participate can expect their child to receive different levels of oxygen flow while they are under anesthesia, helping doctors learn more about how to keep children safe during surgery.
