ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying a new method to help doctors determine when critically ill patients can safely stop using a breathing machine. Many patients struggle to breathe on their own after being on a ventilator, and this can lead to what is known as weaning failure. The trial is testing a tool called the plethysmography variability index (PVI), which is a simple and non-invasive way to measure how well a patient's body can handle fluids. By using PVI, doctors hope to predict whether a patient will successfully breathe on their own during a trial period without the ventilator.
To participate in this trial, patients need to be between the ages of 65 and 74 and currently receiving intubation and mechanical ventilation, with certain criteria met for moving towards extubation (removing the breathing tube). However, patients with unstable heart conditions or those who have had a tracheostomy (a different method of breathing support) will not be eligible. If patients qualify and choose to join, they can expect to undergo assessments using the PVI tool as part of their care, which could help improve their chances of successfully transitioning off the ventilator.
