ClinConnect Summary
The "Nutrition in Paediatric Critical Care" study is a research project looking at how nutrition support affects children who are in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). This study will take place in hospitals across Australia and New Zealand, and it aims to gather important information about how children receive nutrition during their hospital stay. Researchers want to understand things like how nutrition is provided (whether through eating, tubes, or IV), how much energy and protein they get, how long they stay on breathing machines, how long they are in the hospital, and their overall health outcomes.
To be eligible for the study, children must be 18 years old or younger, be admitted to the PICU for more than 72 hours, and must be admitted after the study begins. Unfortunately, children who are being admitted for end-of-life care or organ donation cannot participate. Families of eligible patients can expect to have their child's nutrition and health closely monitored during their hospital stay, and the information gathered will help improve care for future patients in similar situations. This study is currently recruiting participants and is an important step in understanding how best to support children in critical care.
