ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial is studying two different scoring systems, the New Injury Severity Score (NISS) and the Injury Severity Score (ISS), to see which one better predicts the risk of death in trauma patients who are admitted to emergency rooms in Iraq. The researchers want to find out if NISS is more accurate than ISS and if there are certain groups of trauma patients for whom one score works better than the other.

To participate in this study, patients need to be trauma victims who arrive at the emergency room within six hours of their injury. They also need to have enough injury information available for the researchers to calculate both scores. Participants will be assessed using both scoring systems when they arrive and will be monitored throughout their hospital stay to track their health outcomes. This study is open to all adults aged 18 and older, except for those with certain conditions like burns as the main injury or those who are pregnant. It’s important that patients or their guardians provide consent to participate in the trial.

Eligibility criteria

  • Inclusion Criteria:
  • Trauma patients admitted to the emergency room (ER).
  • Patients with documented injury data are sufficient for calculating both the NISS and ISS.
  • Patients admitted to the ER within 6 hours of injury.
  • Patients providing informed consent (or consent obtained from a legal guardian in cases of incapacity).
  • Exclusion Criteria:
  • Patients under 18 years of age.
  • Trauma cases involving burns as the primary injury.
  • Patients with incomplete medical records or insufficient data to calculate NISS and ISS.
  • Patients with pre-existing terminal conditions (e.g., advanced cancer, end-stage organ failure) unrelated to the trauma.
  • Patients who died on arrival or before NISS/ISS assessment could be performed.
  • Cases involving pregnant patients, if the primary focus of injury and risk assessment is maternal-fetal outcomes.
