ClinConnect Summary
The SMARTER trial is looking into a new way to improve colorectal cancer screening by using blood tests. Currently, people aged 50 to 74 in Denmark are invited to take a stool test every two years to check for hidden blood, which can be a sign of cancer. If someone tests positive, they usually have to go through a colonoscopy, a procedure that examines the colon for cancer. Unfortunately, many of these colonoscopies turn out to be unnecessary, as they show no signs of cancer, causing discomfort for patients and putting a strain on healthcare resources. This trial aims to see if blood tests can help identify those who are at very low risk of having cancer, thus potentially reducing the number of unnecessary colonoscopies.
To participate in the trial, you need to be part of the colorectal cancer screening program. The study is open to everyone, regardless of gender, and is currently recruiting participants. If you join, you can expect to have your blood tested, which may help make future screenings more accurate and less invasive. This trial is important because it could lead to a more personalized approach to cancer screening, making the process easier for patients and the healthcare system alike.
