ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is investigating how certain proteins in the blood and heart behave during cardiac surgery in children. When children undergo heart surgery, especially those who are very young or small, they face unique challenges that can lead to complications like inflammation and organ injury. The researchers are particularly interested in a process called O-GlcNAcylation, which might help protect the heart during stressful situations, such as surgery.
To participate in this study, children must be between 0 and 17 years old and scheduled for cardiac surgery that requires the use of a heart-lung machine (called extracorporeal circulation). It's important to note that children with infections, fever, certain immune or metabolic disorders, or other specific health conditions will not be eligible. If your child is part of this study, you will be asked to give consent for their participation, and they will undergo some testing to help the researchers understand how to improve heart care for young patients in the future.
