ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying a new way to help prevent infections in patients who have osseointegrated prostheses, which are special implants that attach directly to the bone after an amputation. The trial will include 20 patients who will be recruited from the orthopaedic outpatient clinic at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. To be eligible, participants must be 18 years or older and have osseointegrated prostheses, but those with ongoing infections or who are pregnant cannot participate.
Participants will follow their usual care routine for managing their stoma, which is the opening created during surgery. They will also receive a treatment called antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT) to help prevent infections. This involves applying a special medication to the implant and then using a light device to activate it. The first treatment will happen in the clinic, while the following sessions will be done at home over a two-week period. Throughout the study, participants' health and any side effects will be closely monitored to ensure their safety.
