ClinConnect Summary
The Native Spirit trial is studying an after-school program designed to help American Indian youth improve their self-esteem, cultural identity, and resilience while preventing substance use. The program is called Native Spirit (NS) and focuses on engaging students in local cultural activities. By participating in this program, the hope is that young people will feel more connected to their culture and community, which can lead to better health outcomes. This research will be conducted in two Indigenous communities in Arizona, and it will involve gathering information at different times to see how well the program works.
To be eligible for the study, participants must be English-speaking adolescents in grades 7-12 who are members of the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community or the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and involved in after-school programs. The program is open to all youth, but the study will focus on American Indian participants for the analysis. If you join the program, you can expect to participate in ten sessions filled with cultural activities and discussions aimed at strengthening your connection to your heritage. This initiative not only supports individual growth but also aims to build a stronger community.
