ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is comparing two different surgical methods for treating severe obesity, specifically for people with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 40 and 50. The first method is called Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, which reduces the size of the stomach and connects it to the small intestine, helping patients eat less and absorb fewer calories. The second method, known as single anastomosis duodenoileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy, also reduces the stomach size and involves a simpler connection between the stomach and the small intestine. The goal of the study is to see if one technique is better than the other in helping patients maintain their weight after surgery and whether there are any differences in issues like gastroesophageal reflux (which can cause heartburn).
To be eligible for this trial, participants should be between the ages of 18 and 60 with a BMI in the specified range who are suitable candidates for mixed bariatric surgery. The trial will help gather important information, as there isn't enough data yet to determine if one surgical option is superior to the other. Participants can expect to be monitored over time to evaluate their weight control and any related health concerns after surgery. This study aims to contribute valuable insights that could benefit future patients seeking treatment for obesity.
