ClinConnect Summary
This small, early study tests whether a breathing tube system (an artificial air-pocket device) could help keep breathing safer during an avalanche burial. In a randomized, double-blind, cross-over design, healthy adult volunteers will undergo two simulated burial sessions: one with a functioning device that redirects exhaled air away from the breathing space, and one with a non-functioning device. Each session lasts about 45 minutes, and the order is randomized so each person serves as their own control. Researchers will closely monitor oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, breathing rate, heart rate, body temperature, and other vitals to see if the device changes these measures.
Eligible participants are adults aged 18–60 who can consent and do not have known lung or heart disease, neuromuscular problems, chest deformities, acute respiratory infections, pregnancy, claustrophobia, or other disqualifying conditions. The study is conducted at Kantonsspital Aarau in Switzerland, aims to enroll about 10 people, and results will help determine whether such a rescue device could improve survival in avalanche victims. Participation involves no guaranteed personal benefit and safety is monitored throughout; you can stop the test if you feel uncomfortable.
