ClinConnect Summary
The WISE-2B Brain Study is a research trial aimed at understanding how losing weight and improving diabetes after weight loss surgery (bariatric surgery) affect brain function and thinking skills. Researchers are also looking into whether a treatment called transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation (tVNS), which is a non-invasive procedure done 30 days after surgery, can further enhance brain function. It's important to note that this study will not cover the costs of the bariatric surgery itself.
To participate in the trial, individuals must be between 20 to 75 years old, able to speak English, and physically mobile. They should have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 35 before surgery and be willing to undergo MRI scans and provide a small blood sample. However, people with certain health issues, like neurological disorders or unstable medical conditions, will not be eligible. Participants can expect to contribute to valuable research that could help others with diabetes and weight management, while also receiving information about their own brain health.
