ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying whether patients with Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) have higher levels of a hormone called cortisol in their saliva compared to people who do not have this condition. Cortisol is often linked to stress and anxiety, and since emotional factors can contribute to TMD, researchers want to see if there’s a connection. Participants will be assessed to confirm if they have TMD using a specific set of guidelines, and then they will be divided into two groups: those with TMD and those without.
To participate in the study, individuals must be patients at the dental clinic of the University of Coimbra and should be between the ages of 65 and 74. However, pregnant women, minors, and individuals who cannot make decisions on their own are not eligible. Those who choose to join the study will need to sign a consent form and will provide a saliva sample for analysis. This research aims to better understand the relationship between stress and TMD, which could lead to improved treatments in the future.
