ClinConnect Summary
The "Sing Out Loud" trial is studying how a choral singing program can help nursing home residents living with dementia. Researchers want to find out if singing together can improve the physical and emotional well-being of these individuals. They will look at whether singing helps raise levels of a hormone called oxytocin, which promotes feelings of connection, while lowering cortisol, a hormone related to stress. The study will compare a group that participates in the singing program with a control group that does not sing, to see if there are improvements in mood, social connections, and symptoms like apathy or aggression.
To join the trial, participants need to be between 59 and 90 years old, have a diagnosis of dementia, and reside in a nursing home. They should also be interested in taking part and able to provide saliva samples for testing. Over eight weeks, participants in the singing program will practice once a week, leading up to a special concert for family members. This program aims to bring joy and improve the quality of life for those living with dementia, while also providing valuable insights for researchers.
