ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial is studying a new approach to help control the spread of dengue fever in Singapore. Researchers want to see if using male mosquitoes infected with a bacteria called Wolbachia, along with a method to sterilize mosquitoes (called the Sterile Insect Technique), can reduce active dengue cases in certain neighborhoods. The trial is currently looking for participants and is focusing on areas where there have been at least 10 reported dengue cases recently.

To be eligible for this trial, participants must live in public housing areas that have experienced a recent spike in dengue cases, specifically with at least 10 new cases reported within 30 days. These areas should not have previously had releases of the Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes and need to be a certain distance away from other similar releases. If you are living in such an area and meet these criteria, you could be part of a study that aims to help control dengue outbreaks and protect your community. Participants will be informed about what to expect during the trial, including any interventions that may take place.

Eligibility criteria

  • Eligible dengue clusters will be limited to public housing estates and with at least 10 dengue cases comprising that dengue cluster before allocation into intervention or control arms. The selected clusters will be in areas with relatively high sector-level GAI of at least 0.2 at the time of the 10th reported case. Additionally, the first 10 cases must be reported within 30 days of the first case. Additionally, clusters must be in areas which have never experienced Wolbachia-Aedes releases and at least 700 m away from existing Wolbachia-Aedes release areas.
