ClinConnect Summary
This study is testing whether using augmented reality (AR) teaching helps oncology nurses better manage malignant fungating wounds (MFWs) in people with advanced cancer. In a randomized trial, nurses will be assigned to either AR-based training or traditional classroom teaching, and neither the nurses nor the study team will know which group some participants are in until later. The main outcome is nurse knowledge about MFW care measured at 6 months; higher scores mean better knowledge. A secondary outcome is the nurses’ clinical reasoning ability, also measured at 6 months.
Who can join and what to expect: Eligible participants are full-time oncology ward nurses aged 20 and older, at a teaching hospital in northern Taiwan, who are willing to participate and sign consent. They must be able to complete the full study. Those not working in oncology wards or who can’t complete participation won’t be eligible. The AR group will use a platform called MFWs with AR to work through updated care guidelines and realistic simulated scenarios to practice skills like wound assessment, odor control, exudate management, infection prevention, and pain control. The control group will receive standard classroom teaching and case discussions. Enrollment is ongoing, with an estimated 188 participants, and the study is overseen by a data monitoring committee. Results are not yet available.
