ClinConnect Summary
This study, called the Pseudoexfoliation and Carpal Tunnel Study, is an observational, prospective case-control project at Ankara Training and Research Hospital. Researchers want to learn how often eye-related pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PES) and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) occur together and whether they share underlying biological factors. They will test nerve function with electromyography (EMG) and, if CTS is found, ask participants to complete a short CTS symptom and daily function questionnaire (the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire). They may also look at biochemical markers to understand any links between PES and CTS. The study does not test a treatment.
If you are eligible, you could join one of two groups. PES participants will be adults 18–90 diagnosed with PES during a routine eye exam and will have an EMG test on the same day to check for CTS. A comparison group will include adults of similar age and sex who have mechanical pain in the back, knee, or hip but no CTS symptoms, who will also have an EMG test on the same day. Exclusions include major hand-wrist trauma or surgery, diabetes, rheumatoid or thyroid disease, pregnancy, and several other conditions. The researchers will collect basic health information and EMG results from both groups. The study aims to enroll about 118 people and results will be shared in aggregated form to protect individual privacy.
