ClinConnect Summary
This study is watching people who are having a total knee replacement to learn how objective measurements of muscle (size and strength), nerve-muscle activity, walking speed, and other function relate to everyday activity and quality of life after surgery. About 400 adults at several clinics in Germany and the United States (including Technical University Munich and University Hospital Bonn) will be followed from before surgery and then at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after surgery. The researchers use ultrasound to measure muscle mass, tests to measure muscle strength, neuromuscular activity, walking tests, swelling, and questions about daily activities and life quality. This is an observational study, meaning no new treatment is being tested.
Who can join? Adults 18 and older who are undergoing total knee replacement for severe knee arthritis and who can complete the Return to Activity test battery. Those who cannot complete these tests aren’t eligible. If you participate, you’ll have visits before surgery and at about 6 weeks, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery to repeat the assessments. The goal is to see how these objective measurements relate to real-life activity and overall well-being after knee replacement. The study is currently enrolling by invitation and is expected to finish around July 2027; results are not yet available.
