Trans Spinal Magnetic Stimulation Cortical Excitability

ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial is studying how a type of painless magnetic stimulation applied to the spine, called trans-spinal magnetic stimulation (TsMS), affects brain activity in healthy adults. Researchers want to see how different settings, like the strength and speed of the magnetic pulses, change the brain’s ability to send signals to muscles. The goal is to find the best way to use this technique, which might help develop new treatments for brain and nerve conditions in the future.

Adults between 18 and 40 years old who are healthy, right-handed, and, for women, using birth control consistently are eligible to join. Participants will undergo sessions where the magnetic stimulation is applied while researchers measure how their brain and muscles respond. The study is designed so that neither the participants nor the researchers know which settings are being used at the time, helping to keep the results unbiased. It’s important to note that people who are pregnant, have a history of seizures, certain metal implants, or neurological or muscle problems won’t be able to participate.

Eligibility criteria

  • Healthy adults aged 18-40 years, of both sexes; right-handed (confirmed via the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory); and for women, consistent use of contraceptive medication to mitigate hormonal influences on nervous system excitability.
  • Exclusion Criteria:
  • Pregnancy; history of seizures or epilepsy; metallic implants in the head, spine, face, or heart; diagnosed neurological or musculoskeletal conditions that could interfere with assessments or interventions; or use of substances that alter nervous system excitability.
