Virtual Reality Ultrasound Guided Regional Anesthesia Simulation

ClinConnect Summary

This study is looking at the best way to teach healthcare workers how to perform a special type of nerve block called an ultrasound-guided supra-inguinal fascia iliaca (SIFI) block. This nerve block helps control pain for patients with hip fractures, which can lead to faster recovery and shorter hospital stays. The researchers want to find out if learning through immersive virtual reality (iVR)—a computer-based simulation that feels very realistic—is just as effective as the traditional method of practicing on mannequins.

The study is open to doctors and trainees who work in anesthesiology, emergency medicine, or orthopedic surgery at The Ottawa Hospital. Participants will be randomly assigned to train either using the iVR simulator or the mannequin. Before training, everyone will get educational videos and materials to prepare. Their skills will be tested before training, right after, and again one month later using a special hybrid simulator that combines a mannequin with real human tissue. The goal is to see which training method helps staff learn best and if the virtual reality option is easy and comfortable to use. This research hopes to improve pain care for hip fracture patients by making training more effective and accessible.
