ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying whether daily bathing with special washcloths containing an antiseptic called chlorhexidine, combined with careful use of certain antibiotics and stomach medicines, can help prevent the spread and infection of a type of bacteria called carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) in intensive care units (ICUs). These bacteria can cause serious infections in hospitals and are difficult to treat because they resist many antibiotics. The study will take place in six ICUs across three hospitals in South Korea, where some patients will receive daily chlorhexidine baths while others will have standard baths. Both groups will receive careful monitoring and management of antibiotic and stomach medicine use to avoid unnecessary treatments.
Adults aged 19 and older who are admitted to one of the participating ICUs may be eligible to join, unless they have extensive burns or are allergic to chlorhexidine. Participants in the study can expect to be bathed daily with either the special chlorhexidine washcloths or standard washcloths, and healthcare providers will carefully review their antibiotic and stomach medicine use. The study will look at how well this approach prevents patients from carrying or getting infections caused by CPE, as well as any skin reactions to the antiseptic baths. Results from this trial could help hospitals better protect patients from these tough infections in the future.
