ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial is looking at whether a medicine called dexmedetomidine can help protect brain function after surgery in older adults. Specifically, it focuses on patients over 65 years old who are having robotic urological surgery, which is a type of minimally invasive surgery performed with the help of a robot. After surgery, some older patients experience problems with thinking, memory, or attention, known as postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD), which can affect their recovery and quality of life. This study wants to see if giving dexmedetomidine during surgery can reduce these problems and help patients recover better.

If you join the study, you will have your thinking skills tested before surgery and then again one day and one week after surgery, using a simple memory and thinking test. During surgery, your anesthesia will be carefully monitored, and you will be randomly assigned to receive either the usual anesthesia or anesthesia combined with dexmedetomidine. The medical team will watch your brain oxygen levels closely to make sure your brain is getting enough oxygen. The goal is to find out if dexmedetomidine can protect the brain and improve recovery after robotic surgery. To join, you must be over 65, in fairly good health to have surgery, and able to complete the thinking tests. People with serious health problems, certain mental health issues, or those who are unable to cooperate with the tests won’t be eligible. This study is not yet recruiting but aims to help improve care for older adults undergoing these kinds of surgeries.
