ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying whether a special program of swallowing exercises can help older adults living in nursing homes who have trouble swallowing, a condition called dysphagia. Difficulty swallowing is common in older people and can lead to serious problems like poor nutrition, dehydration, or lung infections. The program includes simple exercises and techniques designed to strengthen the muscles used for swallowing, and it is led by nurses.
To join this study, participants need to be 60 years or older, have some difficulty swallowing as shown by a short questionnaire, be able to communicate well, and be able to do daily activities either on their own or with some help. People with certain skin problems on the neck, high blood pressure, facial pain, or significant facial differences won’t be eligible. Those who participate will either do the swallowing exercises three times a day before meals for six weeks or continue with usual care, like sitting upright during meals. The study will check if these exercises improve swallowing and overall quality of life. This trial offers a simple, safe way to possibly make swallowing easier and safer for older adults living in long-term care.
