ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying the connection between advanced gum disease (called Stage III and IV periodontitis) and sleep bruxism, which is when a person grinds or clenches their teeth during sleep. Researchers will use a simple, painless test called surface electromyography (EMG) to measure the activity of the jaw muscles while participants sleep. This helps to understand how often and how strongly people grind their teeth, comparing those with severe gum disease to those without any periodontal problems.
People between the ages of 28 and 50 who take good care of their teeth and are willing to join the study may be eligible. Participants either have to have a diagnosis of advanced gum disease or not have any gum disease to be in the comparison group. The study does not include people who wear removable dentures, are currently having orthodontic treatment (like braces), have jaw joint problems or facial pain, take certain medications, or have conditions like diabetes or psychiatric disorders. If you join, you can expect to have a simple, non-invasive test done while you sleep that monitors your jaw muscles, with no discomfort involved. This study is still looking for volunteers to help better understand how gum disease and teeth grinding during sleep might be related.
